Mohan and Santhanam are playing prominent roles in this movie. Velayutham" is an inspiration from the Telugu film"Azad" which had Nagarjuna and Soundarya in the lead roles.
Super star Vijay is appearing as the theme Character, Velayudham in the movie. Vijay as Velu lives in a small village in Tamil Nadu with his family. Sarayanya Mohan as Kaveri is appearing as Velu's sister. Their mother is a widow. Hansikha as Vaidhiyalakshmi is appearing as Velu's fiancée. Valu requires some money for his sisters marriage. So he goes to Chennai to get some that he had put in one private chit fund company. Genelia is a journalist in Chennai. Abhimanyu singh is doing the villain role in the movie. He is involved in many illegal activities in Chennai. He is a chota don of Chennai and works for underworld kings. Genelia is a strong reporter with a lot of courage. But she has been harassed by the villain a lot of time. She wants some one to fight against them. She comes across a lot of illegal activities by the villain. At last she creates a fictional character called Velayudham. A bomb blast takes place in Chennai when Vijay reaches there. But he defuses many bombs. This makes the common people to think that Valu is Velayutham. Genelia meets Velu and tell him regarding the fictional character Velayutham. But he refuses to play that role. But later he comes to know that he has been cheated by the chit company and more over that company is run by the Villain. This makes him to play as Velayuthan. Then comes the exciting scenes of the movie. And rest of the film speaks about how Vijay takes over villain and his gang.
